How to use the calculator for salary packaging
There are five basic steps to using our calculator.
Step one: Select your type of employment industry
The industry sector you work in may impact your salary packaging benefits. You can choose from:
Public sector
Some public employers may be FBT-exempt. These may include:
Public hospitals.
Aged and community care.
Public ambulance services.
Queensland government departments.
These employers may offer FBT-exempt caps of $9010 for living expenses and $2650 for meal entertainment expenses.
Non-profit sector
Certain non-profit organisations may have a different cap. These organisations may offer benefit caps of $15,900 for living expenses and $2650 for meal entertainment expense. Employers of this type may include:
Charities registered as Public Benevolent Institutions.
Organisations registered as Health Promotion Charities.
Certain non-profit private hospitals.
Private sector
Private sector companies may offer a salary packaging program if they wish. These programs typically provide novated lease arrangements.
Step two: Put in your annual salary
Type in your gross annual income. Do not include superannuation contributions or any bonuses. Calculations are based on the current 2024-25 personal income tax rates and thresholds. The Medicare levy will be included in the results.
Step three: Choose what you want to package
Pick the benefits you’re interested in packaging. Your employer determines what benefits you can package through their internal policies. Benefits you may package include:
Fixed expenses
Rent.
Mortgage.
Debt repayments.
Variable expenses
Private education fees.
Groceries.
Utility bills.
Insurance premiums.
Gym memberships.
Meal entertainment expenses
Dining out.
Catering expenses.
Taxi fare to and from an event.
Step four: Enter the amount being packaged
Estimate the value of the benefits you want to package. The calculator will alert you if you exceed the cap your nominated employer offers.
Step five: See the results for your take-home pay
The salary packaging calculator provides an estimate of your potential tax impact and take-home pay, based on the details you provide. Results are general in nature and do not guarantee outcomes.
Note: Any GST savings shown are estimates only and assume your employer passes on input tax credits, which may not apply in all cases. Confirm with your employer how GST is handled. Calculations do not consider your employer’s accounting methods and internal policies. The calculator takes into account applicable low-income tax offsets or low-income Medicare levy reductions. For personal taxation advice, speak to a registered tax agent.
Next steps after using the calculator
If you’re interested in pursuing salary packaging, there are some concrete steps you can take to get started.
Confirm eligibility
Wanting to salary package is one thing. But you need to find out if your employer offers it. If they do, determine their status for FBT purposes. Some employers may be exempt from FBT up to certain caps, while others could be considered rebatable employers. Rebatable employers may include:
Trade unions.
Private schools.
Medical research institutes.
Choose a salary packaging provider
The right provider to handle administration regarding your salary package is crucial. Factors to consider include:
You don’t want any potential benefits to get eaten up by administration fees. Compare rates and what the company provides.
Will the provider handle all of your administrative and compliance needs? How long does it take them to process claims? Search for prompt and comprehensive service.
What do their previous clients have to say about them? Check for any red flags in their conduct through customer reviews.
Book an initial consultation to learn more about your options. No personal financial advice will be provided during this meeting.
Many providers offer an initial consultation to get to know a potential client’s needs. This is also a good opportunity to review a salary packaging calculator, understand the provider’s fee structure, and explore the services available. No personal financial advice will be provided during your consultation. For tailored financial advice, you may be referred to an authorised representative of Lifespan Financial Planning Pty Ltd (AFSL 229892).
Gather documentation
Prepare the documentation needed for your application. For guidance, refer to your provider’s checklist. Documents you may need to find include:
The two to three most recent pay slips.
Rental agreement or mortgage documents.
Bank account details.
Submit your application
Submit your application as per your provider’s process. Approval times may vary. If the application is accepted, the provider begins to implement your packaging arrangement through administrative work including integration with your employer’s payroll department. Depending on your provider’s process, your salary packaging may begin in five to six weeks.
